What We’re Talking About

Meet Bocotek’s Co-Founder – John Bears

For John Bears, adventure runs through his blood. His combination of passion for adventure and serving people has turned into a perfect marriage for Bocotek’s latest endeavor, the TVR Software & Training Program. The Tribal Vocational Rehabilitation (TVR) software and training courses are built specifically for American Indian Vocational Rehabilitation Services (AVIRS).

John’s optimism and ‘Choose Love’ attitude makes him an excellent choice to lead the new TVR division. John is heading up the training and software development programs. His training includes Directors and Consolers of the different VR departments throughout the Native American community.

John grew up in Haines, Alaska right outside of the Tlingit village. He says “It was a really amazing place to grow up.” Haines is a tiny isolated town, probably has 2000 residence, it’s nestled amongst mountains, right on the ocean. He remembers almost every night during the winter seeing the northern lights, and seeing whales in the bay.   He said you can see the salmon going upstream and the bears eating them, it indeed seems like a magical place.

John’s Professional Background started at a young age when he joined the US Navy. John was stationed on the USS Caron. Once John moved on from the military he used his expertise in the private sector working Federal facilities like Los Alamos and Sandia National Labs. After working in this segment of business John join forces with Co-Founder Charlotte Koppin and together they started Bocotek in 1999. Bocotek started off as a printer supply company and is now involved in Manage IT, Digital Marketing and the TVR software.

Bocotek is a customer service company first and foremost. TVR, Computer Network Management, and Digital Marketing are heavy on the technical spectrum but customer service and providing a caring response is the heart of this company.

Let’s take a look at the Q&A we had with him as he explained the different layers of Bocotek and how he handles his role as a leader.

Q: What is your why? Your Passion?

John:  I want to educate and train people so they can be leaders in their communities and make the world a better place.  I feel like all the work Bocotek has done to build an IT Management and Digital Marketing department has prepared us for supporting the TVR Program where I do the majority of the training and live my passion.

Q: What is your role at Bocotek?

John:  I am a Co-Founder and oversee the business as a whole and engage and work in the company when needed. My primary focus is to build the TVR department while continuing to improving training and software to serve our AIVRS clients.

Q: What has been your biggest successes in this business?

John:  Working with our customers. I am interested in building relationships and when I know that I am providing the service they need and it makes a difference, I am SUCCESSFUL!

Q: Have you had failures?

John: If you consider learning a part of failure than I have learned a lot. Business can be hard and unexpected but if you continue to show up every day and do your best you will learn the lessons, and then there are no failures.

Q: What are some of your productivity hacks or ways that you manage your time?

John: I try to keep to a routine every day.  I have big goals, but I always take things one day at a time.  My favorite line is “you eat an elephant one bite at a time” and it has served me well for 20 years.

Q: Grab your smartphone, what’s the last app you opened and what did you do with it?

John:  Google Photos, it is one of my all-time favorites.  Its does facial, object and location recognition.  I love photography, and take a lot of pictures with my Google Pixel phone.
